Welcome to My Philosophical Journey #

Like most people, I have worked hard to achieve success, but over the years, I’ve realized that true fulfillment comes from within, not from material wealth. The journey so far has led me to look inward in an effort to become a better human. This journey was inspired by my friend Matt. He possesses a unique ability to bring out the best in everyone he meets. Over the years, he has engaged me in discussions about philosophy, igniting my interest. While I typically read for research rather than enjoyment, this ambitious friend has introduced me to philosophy, starting with Marcus Aurelius’ Meditations, opening up a new world for me. This introduction set me on my path to exploring philosophy and Stoicism. Now, he has challenged me to read a classical literature list alongside him. This list originates from Joseph Brodsky’s compilation of 83 books that one should read to engage in intelligent conversation. It can be said that this collection includes some of the most influential works in literary history, spanning from ancient texts to modern philosophical treatises. Each piece has contributed to shaping human thought and culture over millennia.

I am going to accept his challenge. However, my goal is to focus on the parallels to philosophy, especially within the religious texts, for this reading challenge. I have only a few books with which I can draw parallels, such as Zeno of Citium, Marcus Aurelius’ Meditations, Letters from a Stoic, Enchiridion, Cicero, and Viktor Frankl’s A Man’s Search for Meaning. I look forward to seeing how this experience changes my thoughts and perception of humanity. Will human thought and culture across history inspire me? Will I be able to have an intelligent conversation? I am not sure one needs to read this list to have an intelligent conversation, but let’s see what I think after this challenge is completed, as this could be the thoughts of an unintelligent mind.

The Epic of Gilgamesh

Gilgamesh is king of Uruk; he is ⅔ god and ⅓ man and is a tyrannical ruler and big-time rapist.  It’s going to be a challenge to find philosophical and stoic parallels, I think!
